Magee, Mississippi is a strong, viable community with a strong business climate located centrally between two of the largest municipalities in the state, Jackson and Hattiesburg. Magee has public and private schools, various church denominations and medical and dental facilities to meet the needs of the community. Magee has residential and commercial development and a progressive Chamber of Commerce. Magee's strength lies in the spirit of her people and their dedication to maintaining the high quality of life they have enjoyed through the years.
First settled in around 1820, Magee began with the arrival of brothers-in-law, Arthur Mangum and Phillip Magee who moved with their families from North Carolina. They purchased land for 12 1/2 cents an acre and were soon joined by more pioneers from the Carolinas and Virginia.
In 1840, Willis Magee, son of Phillip, built a gristmill on Little Goodwater Creek inside the present city limits. In 1855 he established the area’s first post office. The community grew steadily and was incorporated as a village on February 25, 1900. By 1910 the village had a population of 685 and was an active trade center.
