Magee's History
First settled in around 1820, Magee began with the arrival of brothers-in-law, Arthur Mangum and Phillip Magee who moved with their families from North Carolina. They purchased land for 12 1/2cents an acre and were soon joined by more pioneers from the Carolinas and Virginia. In 1840, Willis Magee, son of Phillip, built a gristmill on Little Goodwater Creek inside the present city limits. In 1855 Magee established the area’s first post office. The community grew steadily and was incorporated as a village on February 25, 1900. By 1910 the village had a population of 685 and was an active trade center.
